Quicktime is the favored Synchromesh playback wrapper. Each unit can playback a wide range of codecs, at any frame rate, audio sample rate and image size. With a Mac in the system, any supported Quicktime codec at all can be imported and converted to a valid playback codec.

Quicktime is a versatile media file format, designed by Apple, but supported on Windows also. It's also the basis for MPEG-4 and other formats. It 'wraps' video in a wide range of codecs, so it can support anything from uncompressed down to web video.

We provide a license for an optimized Avid DNxHD codec with each Synchromesh unit, (plus a recording license in Pro versions). DNxHD has been approved as SMPTE VC-3, and is one of the few codecs that supports our whole codec wish-list:

• Mastering quality video - i.e. visually lossless through multiple generations and manipulations
• Sufficient compression to fit large HD pieces on fast disk arrays
• HD picture sizes
• Clearly defined bit-rates - less errors between encoder and show-site
• 10-bit and 8-bit component video
• Alpha channels supported
• Free Quicktime codec component (non-optimized) for review, delivery or pre-encoding
• FFMPEG support for non-Mac review
