Color Correction PDF Print E-mail

Although onsite color correction is a frightening prospect, it's common that clips be delivered with small differences in their appearance that minor changes can really improve, and help to add a consistent look.

Synchromesh allows you to set brightness, contrast, saturation, gamma and other tweaks non-destructively for each clip.

As each clip is decoded from the movie file, it's immediately converted to 16-bit floating point, and a mild dither is applied. The dither isn't visible at unity, but if you do need to adjust video levels, it prevents unpleasant color banding appearing. The 16-bit format also allows us to convert to a standard linear (gamma corrected) colorspace and prevent cropping (thus supporting super black and super white)

The standard adjustments include (note that all controls work on YUV and RGB clips):

  • Brightness (black level)
  • Contrast (white level)
  • Saturation
  • Gamma

There's also some advanced settings:

  • Colorspace override (it's generally detected from the video codec)
  • Digital levels (analogous to 'pedestal' in analog video)
  • Red, Green and Blue Lift (black levels)
  • Red, Green and Blue Gamma
  • Red, Green and Blue Gain

There's also Alpha level lift, gamma and gain for clips that have an alpha channel.
